How to Get Urine Out of a Mattress: Stains, Smell, and Next Time

October 7, 2026 · 3 min read

Older woman smoothing a fresh white sheet on a bed in a bright bedroom, with a fan and folded towels nearby.

To get urine out of a mattress, strip the bed, blot (don't rub), treat the spot with an enzyme cleaner or a vinegar-and-water mix, cover it with baking soda, then let it dry all the way. Older stains and smell usually need a second round.

If it just happened

  1. Strip everything. Sheets, mattress pad, and any blanket that touched the wet spot go straight to the wash. Rinse them in cold water first.
  2. Blot with dry towels. Press down hard and swap towels until they come up mostly dry. Rubbing pushes urine deeper into the foam.
  3. Treat the spot. Lightly spray an enzyme cleaner made for urine and leave it as long as the label says. No enzyme cleaner at home? Mix equal parts white vinegar and cool water in a spray bottle, mist the spot, and blot again.
  4. Cover it with baking soda. Use a thick layer and leave it at least 8 hours. It pulls out leftover moisture and odor.
  5. Vacuum and dry. Vacuum the baking soda, then run a fan or open a window until the spot is dry to the touch, top and sides. Remake the bed only when it is fully dry.

Old pee stains and lingering smell

When urine dries, it leaves crystals behind in the fabric and foam. That is why a mattress can look clean and still smell, especially on a warm night. Repeat the enzyme step two or three times, letting the mattress dry fully between rounds. For a yellow stain on a light cover, some people dab on 3% hydrogen peroxide. Test a hidden corner first, since it can lighten fabric.

What to skip

  • Bleach. Mixed with the ammonia in urine, it can give off harsh fumes.
  • Hot water and steam. Heat can set the stain and the smell.
  • Soaking memory foam. Foam holds water and dries slowly. Use light sprays and check the maker's care label before you start.
  • Mixing cleaners. Use one product, rinse by blotting, then try the next.

If you are helping a parent, keep the cleanup quiet and matter-of-fact. A plain "I've got the sheets" goes further than a long reassurance. Our guide to changing protection with dignity has more on that.

Set up the bed so it doesn't happen again

If leaks happen most nights, protect the mattress in two places:

  • On the bed: a waterproof mattress cover, then a disposable bed protector on top of the sheet where the hips land. Use one protector at a time. Stacking them doesn't add absorbency.
  • On the body: overnight underwear sized to the waist and hips. A snug fit at the legs helps stop side leaks when someone sleeps on their side.

30" x 36", 10 per pack. Absorbent top, waterproof backing.

FAQ

What is the best way to remove urine from a mattress?

Blot as much as you can, use an enzyme cleaner made for urine, then baking soda overnight, and dry completely. Enzyme cleaners break down what causes the smell. Vinegar and water work for lighter, fresh spots.

What happens if pee dries in a mattress?

It leaves a stain and an odor that can come back with heat or humidity. Treat it like a fresh spot, but expect to repeat the enzyme step two or three times.

How do you get the urine smell out of a mattress fast?

Overnight baking soda works best. If you need the bed back sooner, give it a few hours under a fan, then vacuum.

Is it safe to sleep on a mattress after a urine accident?

Once it is cleaned and fully dry, yes. Don't make the bed over a damp spot, since moisture trapped under sheets can lead to mildew and smell.

When should we talk to a doctor about wetting the bed?

If nighttime leaks are new, sudden, or come with pain, fever, or confusion, call a clinician. Here is what to track before the visit, and our caregiver guide to bedwetting in older adults.
