Our commitment

Because Market is committed to making becausemarket.com accessible to the widest possible audience, including people with disabilities. We believe that everyone deserves the dignity of being able to research, shop for, and manage their personal care subscriptions independently and on their own terms.

Conformance target

We are working toward conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, with ongoing review against the WCAG 2.2 update. We treat WCAG 2.1 AA as the baseline standard our storefront should meet on every page and template.

Measures we take

To support this commitment, we have done and continue to do the following:

  • Build with semantic HTML, ARIA landmarks, and a single page-level <h1> so screen readers can navigate the page structure.
  • Provide a visible skip link to the main content on every page.
  • Ensure all interactive controls are reachable and operable with a keyboard alone, with a clearly visible focus indicator.
  • Trap focus inside modal dialogs, cart drawers, and filter drawers, and return focus to the trigger element when they close.
  • Provide accessible names for icon-only buttons (cart, search, account, navigation toggles) using visually hidden text or aria-label.
  • Include text alternatives for non-decorative images and mark purely decorative images with empty alt.
  • Provide pause controls for auto-playing video content and respect prefers-reduced-motion on animations and transitions.
  • Announce dynamic updates (cart count, variant selection, predictive search results) through ARIA live regions.
  • Maintain color contrast at WCAG AA minimum thresholds (4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text and UI components).
  • Test with keyboard navigation, with screen readers (VoiceOver, NVDA), and with automated tooling (pa11y-ci, axe) in our development workflow.

Known limitations

Despite our ongoing effort, some parts of becausemarket.com are not yet fully accessible. Where we are aware of limitations, we are actively working to address them:

  • Third-party embeds. Some content from third-party providers (reviews, chat, analytics, payment widgets) may not fully meet WCAG 2.1 AA. We work with vendors to surface and resolve issues as they are identified.
  • Merchandiser-authored content. Images and color combinations chosen by our team in the storefront editor may occasionally fall short of contrast or alternative-text guidelines. We audit and correct these on an ongoing basis.
  • PDF and external documents. Older PDF documents and external policy pages may not be fully accessible. We are progressively replacing them with accessible HTML equivalents.

Our remediation roadmap

We treat accessibility as a continuous engineering responsibility, not a one-time fix:

  • Automated accessibility checks (pa11y-ci) run on a weekly schedule against production and on every internal release cycle.
  • Regressions identified by automated tooling, user reports, or internal review are triaged on the same cadence as other production issues.
  • We publish a dated update to this statement each time we complete a substantive accessibility remediation pass.

Assistive technology and browser compatibility

becausemarket.com is designed to work with the current and previous major versions of the following browsers and assistive technologies:

  • Screen readers: VoiceOver (macOS and iOS), NVDA (Windows), TalkBack (Android).
